Campbell Wharf Marina fills with water!

Posted 25th February 2019

Works are well underway at Crest Nicholson’s Campbell Wharf site in Milton Keynes, where the newly completed marina is beginning to come to life, marking the latest milestone for this impressive development.

Campbell Wharf marina was filled with an estimated 25,000 cubic metres of water from the Grand Union Canal over twenty days in January. This followed extensive preparation works, including the installation of 500 metres of sheet piles ranging from 7m to 12m deep. Sheet piles are used to create an underground ‘wall’ in order to retain soil or water. The marina will now be closed for a couple of months, until checks are complete as part of what is called the ‘stilling process’. The marina is due to open at the end of April 2019 and when complete, will boast a high standard of finish to the 111 berths, together with a contemporary facilities building offering a range of services for marina users including fuel for sale.

The marina was created using 110,000m³ of reused Oxford clay excavated from the housing side of the development, moored boats will be able to access an electrical connection for power and only smokeless coal to be used or sold on the marina. At every stage of this development, from construction to waterside living, a green approach has been adopted.

In addition to the new marina and improved waterway facilities, Campbell Wharf comprises 383 homes, a café and restaurant, improved walkways and cycle paths, and an innovative new footbridge which will link the two sides of the development together. All of this will be accompanied by a canal-side pub with amazing views across the Grand Union Canal and the marina.

Steve Massey, Project Manager at Land & Water said:

“The filling of the marina is another great accomplishment for the site team to celebrate. The marina is now really taking shape, with the finishing touches being applied over the coming weeks to achieve a high-quality finish.”

Peter Cusdin, Development Director at Crest Nicholson said:

“This is a really exciting milestone for the project and marks a significant improvement to the waterway amenities locally. We hope that the range of facilities on site at Campbell Wharf will mean greater choice for new and existing residents, as well as attracting more visitors from the canal to Milton Keynes. We look forward to seeing the first moorings on the Marina once it is officially opened to the public at the end of April 2019.”
