Charity calls on MK to ‘Bake the best of it’

Local children’s charity Ride High is asking the people of Milton Keynes to take part in their new online baking competition, to help raise some dough to support the most vulnerable children in Milton Keynes. 

Participants of all ages are invited to enter one of three cake categories: Best horse-themed cake, Best coronavirus-themed cake and Best Valentine’s-themed cake. 

Judging the competition is International Pastry Chef Claire Clark MBE, along with Kirsty Lund Founder of Oh My Cakery, photographer Kate Everall and MK Blogger Sophie etc.  

As it’s an online competition the judges won’t be able to taste the cakes, so participants will submit a photograph of their creation with a name and description, and the experts will judge them on their use of imagination, presentation and creativity. 

There are fabulous prizes for the winning child and adult within each category, and the overall winner will join International Pastry Chef Claire Clark for a half-day one-to-one baking class (once covid restrictions allow). 

Ride High is asking participants to make a suggested donation of £10 to the charity (but it is not a requirement of entering). They hope that around 200 bakers will rise to the challenge to help raise £2,000 to support their vital work in the community.  

Ride High supports the most vulnerable children in Milton Keynes by teaching them to ride and care for horses. Through horses they are able to connect with the most hard-to-reach children in a way that no one else can. Time spent with the horses eases the children’s anxieties and increases their confidence, responsible behaviour, trust and pride, so that when they leave they are happy, confident young people with a brighter future ahead. The pandemic has meant that the charity has had to cancel their usual fundraising events over the last ten months – where fundraising has become more challenging, the need for the charity’s services has risen – fuelled by the impact of the pandemic. 

Fundraising and Marketing Manager Helen Dixon said “During lockdown there are so many things we can’t do – but everyone can still bake! Our ‘Bake the best of it’ competition is intended to give people something fun and creative to do at home, during what is a very challenging time for many. It’s also a great opportunity to help raise vital funds to enable Ride High to continue to keep supporting the most vulnerable children in our community”.
