Local Company Helps Denbigh Focus on Science

The delivery today of 11 microscopes at Denbigh School, donated by Trajan Scientific and Medical, will mean students will be able to gain a better understanding of the fascinating biological study of cells and tissues.

The microscopes were purchased as part of a £1500 award made to Denbigh by Trajan, following the School’s successful trialling of the Crownhill based company’s smartphone adapter for microscopes – the MiPlatform.

Trajan supply a broad range of quality laboratory products across disciplines including histology, haematology, microbiology, chromatography and general consumables.

MiPlatform is a smartphone adapter, which combines the comfort of microscope navigation and smartphone camera lens, thereby, enabling scientists and clinicians to study quality images quickly and ergonomically. It maintains microscope-like navigation to fully utilise the advantages of microscope slides in both clinical and training settings.

During the trial in 2015, Denbigh’s Head of Science, Anthony Brown, found that the adapter enabled the user to capture high quality images. He also discovered that it worked just as well with telescopes, proving perfect for taking pictures of a solar eclipse. This essentially turned the teacher’s smartphone into an astronomy tool. Trajan has since launched the MiPlatform to industries that specialise in pathology, diagnostics and medical research.

Delighted with the new microscopes, Anthony Brown said:

“The new microscopes are a fantastic new resource for our students. It will enable them to carry out investigations in our science laboratories, which will include the examination of blood cells, lung tissues and mitosis.”

Denbigh School Headteacher, Andy Squires, added:

“Two years ago we were excited to be asked to get involved in trialling Trajan’s new innovative microscope adapter. The presentation of the company’s award for the time and effort put in by the Science Faculty was much appreciated by the School.

“Building working relationships with local businesses, such as Trajan, helps our students understand the relevance of what they are learning in the classroom and how this transfers to the workplace.

“I’ve used the MiPlatform myself with my A Level students, who have found it invaluable as a microscope aid.”

Andy Hall, General Manager of Sales and Operations at Trajan is delighted to support Denbigh School, commending them on their results for the trial:

“The results were so impressive, we awarded the School £500 per year for three consecutive years. The School purchased the microscopes with the first two years money. Next year Denbigh will use the remaining part of the award for equipment that examines more complex organic chemical reactions.

“We are delighted that the students will benefit from using the microscopes in their scientific studies.”
