Sleeping bags donated to help the homeless in cold snap

A Northamptonshire charity is donating 50 sleeping bags to help protect members of the county’s homeless community and keep them warm.

The Centre for Policy, Promotion and Prevention (CPPP) is a non-governmental organisation which works on projects across the UK promoting improved cohesion between marginal communities and the wider society.

With an unseasonal cold snap hitting the county in recent days, and temperatures crashing to as low as -4C in parts, fears have been raised that homeless people could be left unprotected against any unexpected icy weather.

Naz Islam, co-director of the charity, has handed over 50 sleeping bags to Northampton Hope Centre, with the bedding to be distributed among some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.

He said: “It may be Spring time but with snow on the ground last week it won’t have felt particularly pleasant for many of our local homeless people. This donation will go some way to protecting them against any further cold snaps and will make sleeping outside more comfortable.

“We don’t want to see anyone left homeless but the fact remains there are dozens of people out there sleeping rough day in, day out and as a society we all need to do our bit to look out for those less fortunate than ourselves.”

CPPP, based in Castilian Street, Northampton has a focus on allowing migrant communities to thrive within British culture, helping minority groups to improve their English and communication skills and develop their vocational skills, so that they can achieve their employment potential.

Louise Danielczuk, fundraising and marketing manager of Northampton Hope Centre, said: “We are very grateful to CPPP for their generous donation.

“Extreme weather such as the snow we saw last week can prove a nasty surprise for anyone sleeping out in the elements. These sleeping bags will make a real difference and ensure those who need them are protected, whatever the weather throws at us.”
