As his year as Mayor of Milton Keynes draws to a close, James Lancaster reflects on a role that placed him at the heart of the city’s communities, celebrations and defining moments.

Over the past year, James has been a familiar face across Milton Keynes, attending everything from cultural events to grassroots initiatives and local fundraisers. However, beyond the ceremonial duties, the role offered something more meaningful — the chance to listen, connect and better understand the people who shape the city every day.

Community remained a clear priority throughout his term. Whether visiting schools, opening new facilities or supporting local charities, the focus was on ensuring that individuals and organisations across Milton Keynes felt recognised and supported.

The year also highlighted the city’s growing reputation for innovation. Milton Keynes continues to position itself as a place that embraces new ideas, and James used his platform to champion that forward-thinking identity wherever possible.

Charity work played a central role in his mayoral year. With a focus on wellbeing, young people and social support, fundraising efforts helped raise both awareness and vital funds for local causes. Camphill MK, his chosen charity of the year, became a key part of that journey and reflected the generosity seen across the city.

There were also moments of wider recognition. Representing Milton Keynes at events including Buckingham Palace, alongside civic engagements closer to home, reinforced the city’s growing confidence and influence.

Yet it was often the smaller moments that left the greatest impression. Conversations with residents, from schoolchildren sharing their achievements to those who remember the early days of the new town, offered a powerful reminder of the character and pride that runs through Milton Keynes.

As his time in office comes to an end, James leaves the role with a strong sense of what the city has achieved over the past year. More importantly, he leaves with confidence in its future — built on community spirit, ambition and a shared sense of progress.
