Buckingham School team ready to Moo

A team of sixth formers from Buckingham School have signed up to walk the Willen Hospice All New Moo 2020, and are encouraging other young people and their families to do the same. The group, made up of 13 students and 16 adults, are planning a circular route through Buckingham to raise funds for the Hospice.

The event, sponsored by Specsavers, takes place on Saturday 12 September and is open to everyone, including families. People are invited to walk, run or even scoot a route of their choice from their own homes. Participants can take on 5 or 10 miles, or even max their miles and go further.

Assistant Headteacher, Director of Sixth Form, Suzy Pykett said: “This is the second year that the Buckingham School has been supporting Willen Hospice by walking the Moo. As a community school we’re really proactive in encouraging our students to put something back into the community. At the moment some people are going through difficult times and we know that the Hospice has had many events cancelled, which means they need all the fundraising they can get. While the students are young, fit and healthy, we’re asking them to take responsibility and do something positive, so that they can be good, active role models for other children in the school and in Buckingham.”

Sixth form Head Girl Megan added: It’s important to us as sixth formers that we do our MK Moo to raise as much money as we can for Willen Hospice, especially as they have had such a hard time not being able to fundraise during Covid-19. We’ve been preparing by getting as many people involved as we can, to fundraise for them.”

Head teacher Andy McGinnes said “This is another great opportunity for the school to contribute to its own community. These are tough times and, because of the financial fallout from Covid-19, charities are suffering, too. So we’ll have great fun, supporting this fantastic cause yet again.”

During the pandemic, the Hospice has remained open to patients, and has provided care to people in their own homes. The charity needs to raise £4.7million every year, that’s £9 a minute, to continue providing its specialist, compassionate care to patients with life-limiting illnesses, and at the end of their lives. With their usual fundraising events and activity cancelled by Covid-19, fundraisers like the Moo will help to make a huge difference.

Tracey Jago, Willen Hospice Events Manager said: “ I’m delighted at how enthusiastic and committed the Buckingham School team is about participating in our event. It’s clear that they all understand how important this fundraising is for us, especially at a time when many of our face to face events have had to be postponed or cancelled. Many of the walkers already have their 1920s themed outfits planned and we can’t wait to see them taking part and having a fantastic day together.”

Entry to the All New Moo is £20 for adults (includes vest) and £8 for children under 14 (includes colour-in bib and goodies).
