If the recent sunshine has suddenly convinced you that you’re an “outdoors person” now, Milton Keynes has excellent timing.

The city’s parks are packed with events for the rest of May — and thankfully, most of them require very little specialist equipment beyond trainers, sunglasses and perhaps a slightly optimistic attitude toward British weather.

With spring properly showing off at the moment, The Parks Trust has lined up a whole mix of family activities, community events, woodland adventures and dog-friendly chaos across MK’s green spaces over the coming weeks.

And yes, there is an entire weekend dedicated to dogs. Priorities.

Big Doggie Do returns to Willen Lake

First up, and arguably the most important date in any Labrador’s social calendar, is the return of the Big Doggie Do at Willen Lake on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May.

Expect pooch-themed displays, expert talks, charity stalls, dog activities, street food and the annual Dog Show sponsored by MK Vet Group.

In other words: two full days of very excited spaniels and owners loudly insisting their dog is “normally much calmer than this”.

There’ll also be opportunities to meet different breeds, browse local traders and generally embrace the kind of wholesome chaos only a giant dog festival can deliver.

Love Willen brings feel-good family fun

Willen Lake stays busy the following weekend as Love Willen takes over on Saturday 23 May.

The fundraising event promises free family activities, sponsored swims, a 5k family fun walk, food stalls and community entertainment — all helping raise money for local hospice care.

It’s one of those proper feel-good community days where you can accidentally spend six hours wandering around while repeatedly saying: “Shall we get another coffee?”

The answer is always yes.

Half-term adventures head into the woods

Meanwhile, families looking to survive half term without relying entirely on screens and snacks might want to head for Howe Park Wood between Tuesday 26 and Thursday 28 May.

The Parks Trust’s free Open Mornings will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm, giving visitors the chance to explore one of Milton Keynes’ most important wildlife sites.

This year’s theme is “Tree-mendous Trees” — which is exactly the sort of pun children pretend to hate before repeating for the next three weeks.

Visitors can enjoy woodland trails, nature challenges and craft sessions while discovering more about the endangered species living within the ancient woodland.

And honestly, there are worse ways to spend a morning than letting children loose in a forest while pretending it’s “educational”.

Discover hidden history at Great Linford Manor Park

Rounding off the month on Sunday 31 May is a British Sign Language interpreted guided walk around Great Linford Manor Park.

Led by the Friends of Great Linford Manor Park, the walk explores the fascinating history of the site, from ancient origins through to its 18th century landscape garden design.

Visitors will uncover hidden features including the Veteran Lime Tree, the Doric Seat and the wonderfully named Ha-ha — which sounds fake but is, in fact, an actual landscape feature.

Julie Dawes, Events and Community Engagement Manager at The Parks Trust, said: “This time of year is ideal for enjoying the city’s parks – they’re buzzing with exciting activity.

“Nature’s springing into life, and our events programme is built to help residents tap into that energy. From relaxed woodland walks and family picnics to vibrant events and inclusive guided tours, there really is something for everyone.”

And after a winter spent collectively staring at grey skies and checking weather apps every 14 minutes, that probably sounds quite appealing.
