Hello Parklife
Posted 1st August 2024The Parks Trust has a heap of family friendly events to get you out and making the most of MK’s beautiful green spaces in the coming weeks.
Love Nature Day (July 6) at Howe Park Wood is the perfect example – local wildlife organisations who are driving positive change in the natural environment will show you how to connect with nature, and how you can support it at home.
There will be a number of crafts and activities to partake in, and if you want to learn how you can support our pollinators, you’ll ‘bee’ in the right place.
The Biodiversity Team will be present and leading guided walks in the ancient woodland – a BSL interpreter will be available for both walks, and you can practice mindfulness in nature with a yoga session.
Add in face painting and storytelling and you’ve got all you need for a fab, free afternoon out.
At Willen Lake (July 6), the 22nd MK Dragon Boat Festival will be causing ripples.
More than 40 teams will compete over the 200m course, and spectators can enjoy food and activities on terra firma.
Back at Howe Park Wood (July 23-25) a series of Open Mornings will be taking a closer look at mammals, by exploring some of the nests, feathers and skulls discovered in local parks.
The woods are home to many endangered plant and animal species, and have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Nature themed challenges and self-guided trails await, and volunteers will be on hand to help you get the most from your visit.
A trip to the Fun Fair is a school holiday treat, and John Scarrott and Sons will bring the rides, stalls and games to Willen Lake between July 25 and August 11.
The aroma of donuts and candy floss will fill the air, accompanied by the excited chatter of youngsters.
At Ashland Lakes (August 7) little folks can get stuck into Parkland Play with face painting, crafts, soft play, storytelling, lawn games and sensory experiences.
Why not join the Outdoor Learning Team for a bug-hunting escapade?
Further sessions will be held at Glebe Farm (August 14), Whitehouse Park (August 21) and Stanton Low (August 28).
History lovers can trace the footsteps of the Romans at North Loughton Valley Park (August 17).
This is a chance to learn about their way of life, and how better to fire up imaginations than with a guided tour around the Roman Villa remains?
Meet ‘real-life’ Roman soldiers and see if you’ve got what it takes to join the army…
Build your own fort before dismantling it with a hand build Roman catapult!
While there, you can also learn about everything from Roman medicine to mosaics. Fun-filled and educational, and as with all these events, free to attend.
