Willen Hospice is encouraging local people to discover the full scope of its work as Hospice Care Week shines a light on the wide range of services beyond end-of-life care.

While many in Milton Keynes know the charity for its palliative and end-of-life support, fewer realise this also includes extensive therapeutic and wellbeing services for patients and their families.

Working closely with NHS teams, GPs, hospitals and community health partners, Willen Hospice helps people live well — offering coordinated, personalised care to meet individual needs.

Andy Tanner, a retired fireman, is one of many residents to benefit. Diagnosed with prostate cancer ten years ago, Andy experiences ongoing symptoms but doesn’t yet need round-the-clock care. The Hospice team supports him through exercise classes, reflexology and practical advice to manage his condition — helping him stay active and enjoy daily life.

“I try to get to the exercise group every week,” says Andy. “Our physiotherapist, Emma, gives us tailored exercises to improve strength and balance. The sessions help me physically and mentally. The Hospice also offers reflexology and massage — it’s the whole package.

“Without the Hospice, I’d be miserable. It would have been a case of ‘it hurts to do things’. Now it’s manageable, and I’ve no worries. It means I can go on holiday with my wife — we’re even booked on a cruise from New York this year, something she’s always wanted to do.”

Only 12.7% of Willen Hospice’s costs are covered by NHS funding. The charity relies on local fundraising and donations to continue delivering care across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.

During Hospice Care Week (6–12 October), which promotes the message that hospice care is “more than you think”, Willen Hospice is encouraging the community to find out more about its services — and how to help sustain them for the future.
