With summer approaching, many drivers are preparing for days out, staycations and longer road trips across the UK and into Europe. While most attention is focused on destinations and travel plans, the condition of the vehicle itself is often overlooked.

However, warmer months can present a range of challenges for motorists. Breakdown providers, including the RAC, report that summer is one of the busiest periods for callouts, with tyres, batteries and engine-related issues among the most common causes.

Longer journeys, higher temperatures and heavier loads can all place additional strain on a vehicle. Tyres, for example, are particularly affected by heat, which increases air pressure and can accelerate wear. Without regular checks, this can lead to reduced performance or, in more serious cases, blowouts – especially during motorway driving.

Cooling systems are another key area. Engines work harder in warmer conditions, and low or degraded coolant can increase the risk of overheating, particularly in slow-moving traffic or on extended journeys.

Air conditioning systems are also frequently tested during the first hot spells of the year. Many drivers only become aware of issues when they need them most, with weak airflow or warm air highlighting a lack of maintenance.

For local garages such as Soul Garages in Olney, these seasonal patterns are familiar. In addition to servicing, the team operates a recovery vehicle to assist motorists in the local area. However, with more drivers travelling further afield during the summer months, the focus is increasingly on preparation rather than response.

As journeys become longer and conditions more demanding, a simple pre-trip check can help identify potential issues early, reducing the risk of disruption and helping ensure a safer, more reliable journey.
