The Future Looks Bright for MK’s Young Digital Talent

Posted 15th August 2017

Milton Keynes College and Video Production and Media Agency, Movey are working together to bridge the gap between education and employment and support the development of students pursuing a career in digital and creative media.

With a severe skills shortage within the sector, limited prospects for local talent and a plethora of young people with the ambition and drive to succeed in this fast moving industry, Movey saw an opportunity to enhance the future of digital media in Milton Keynes.

More than 40 students participated in the Movey Academy Programme in 2016/17 and this number is set to see a significant rise in the coming year. The Movey Academy provides a unique opportunity for students to work on real-life commercial projects and get their first taste of working with clients. This experience helps them to understand briefs, learn on-the-job skills required for a career in video production and the importance of business acumen and professionalism.

Dr Julie Mills, Principal and Chief Executive of Milton Keynes College explains: “When Movey approached the College with the idea to create an academy to support young people into the video production industry, we thought it was a fantastic proposition. The skills that our students are learning through the Academy go a long way in supporting their future employability and underpin the values of the College.

“Movey has an in-depth knowledge of life at MK College, having worked on film productions for a number of high profile events and campaigns, including the Festival in the City showcase and Students of the Year celebrations. A team of students are hand-picked, having demonstrated the ability and appetite for a career in film production.  The selected media students from the College work on real-life, commercial video productions, under the tutelage and guidance of Movey’s experienced team.”

Darren Thomson, Director of Movey says: “It has been phenomenal working with the College on the Movey Academy over the past two years, and we are proud of the successes we have seen so far. There are huge benefits, not only for the students enrolled on the course, but the local economy too, in terms of investing in local talent and developing skills to ensure that the industry continues to go from strength-to-strength here in Milton Keynes.

“We hear a lot of people saying that if they want a good job in video production then they need to head to London or Manchester, but we want to change that. Our aim is to bring the future of video production to Milton Keynes, with the skills, opportunities, and talent to make the digital media industry thrive in our city.”
