Nothing says Christmas quite like the sight – and scent – of a real tree taking pride of place in your home. But how do you pick the perfect one, and make sure it stays green and healthy throughout December? The team at Stoke Goldington Christmas Trees have been growing and caring for their trees for years, and they’re sharing their expert advice to help you get the best from yours.
Start with a Fresh Tree
At Stoke Goldington, freshness is guaranteed. Every tree is grown on-site and cut only when chosen, meaning you take home a truly fresh tree that hasn’t been sitting in a net for weeks. This not only ensures a longer lifespan but keeps its colour, fragrance, and needles intact right through to Christmas Day.
You can pick your own tree from the field, and Chris or Jenny will cut it down for you. It’s an opportunity to make the selection process part of your family’s festive tradition – something that brings people together in the fresh winter air, away from the bustle of retail parks and queues.
Caring for Your Tree
Once home, place your tree straight into a water-holding stand – there’s no need to leave it outside unless you prefer to wait a few days before decorating. If you do, pop it in a bucket of water in a shaded spot, protected from wind and direct sunlight.
When you’re ready to bring it indoors, cut 1cm off the base of the trunk to reopen the stem and help the tree absorb water. Then fill your stand with fresh water – and keep an eye on it daily.
“Trees are surprisingly thirsty,” explains Chris. “They can drink between half a litre and two litres of water a day. Using a stand with a capacity of at least one to two litres is essential, and topping up regularly will keep your tree fresh and vibrant.”
Keep your tree away from direct heat sources like radiators or fires, as excessive warmth causes the needles to dry out faster. With proper care, your tree will stay full and fragrant long after the presents have been opened.
After Christmas
When the festivities draw to a close, dispose of your tree thoughtfully. Many councils operate recycling or chipping schemes that turn trees into compost or mulch – an environmentally friendly way to close the loop. Check your local council’s website or local press for details.
By choosing Stoke Goldington Christmas Trees, you’re supporting a local family farm that values tradition, sustainability, and community. Every visit helps preserve a small piece of rural life and keeps the timeless magic of real Christmas trees alive for generations to come.
