Supporting local charity Willen Hospice

Many Milton Keynes families will know someone who has been cared for by Willen Hospice. Providing free, specialist end-of-life care and services, the hospice only receives 15% of its running costs from ongoing NHS funding. The rest is met through fundraising – mostly the generosity and commitment of local supporters. This Christmas, MK resident Sue is sharing the story of her mum’s experience at the hospice to help raise vital donations. She’s passionate about making sure other local families get the same life-changing support her family did. “When my mum, Anne, died on Christmas Day in 2019, I thought Christmas would never be the same again,” says Sue. “The first sign of her illness was a sore tongue. Eventually, she was diagnosed with tongue cancer which progressed very quickly. We were trying to look after Mum at home, but Willen Hospice’s community team, Willen at Home, suggested it was time..

A towering success

This month we take a look at one of the new city's biggest successes – a firm that is reaching dizzying heights in every sense of the word, and a business that has left its mark here at the Museum. We discovered more about the Niftylift story from its chairman and founder, Roger Bowden. Niftylift is one of Europe’s largest mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) manufacturers and while the business is anchored in these parts, it operates worldwide. “We specialise in compact, low-weight articulating booms that offer maximum performance with minimal environmental impact,” Roger says, explaining his business in relatively simple terms. The name ‘Nifty’ has synonyms including ‘particularly good, skilful, or effective” and ‘attractive and stylish’ – which all perfectly sum up what Roger wants to achieve with every lift the company designs: “Combining the two names seemed the perfect solution,” Roger recalled. 2013 Queens..

When Olney the best will do...

Christmas gift giving is a joy, but buying those gifts can be a whole lot more fraught. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be a stress of endless queues and watching the parking meter. A trip to picturesque Olney is a more leisurely way to shop, while also soaking up the rich history of this wonderful town. Famously, during the eighteenth century, Olney was home to poet William Cowper and curate John Newton, who penned the hymn, Amazing Grace. It’s a fun place too – the origin of the world-famous pancake race. In the lead up to Christmas, Olney’s historic stone buildings, quirky store fronts and Market Square become a twinkly festive hub. It is the perfect place to shop from a parade of independent suppliers. My Little Vintage is a must-visit for gifts galore; from handcrafted furniture to home accessories, and it effortlessly blends the new with old – with..

A Wake-Up Call: Milton Keynes Business Leaders Encouraged to Sleep Out

Business leaders are being urged to brave the cold and spend a night sleeping outdoors to help tackle homelessness in Milton Keynes. The latest CEO Sleepout is taking place on November 16 at Milton Keynes College’s Bletchley Campus. Currently, Milton Keynes has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the UK while rising rents and the cost-of-living crisis are pushing more people onto the city’s streets. According to the homelessness charity, Shelter, there were 2,336 people housed in temporary accommodation across the city last year, while on any given night, 18 people slept rough. “That equates to one in every 122 people in Milton Keynes who go to bed without a secure roof over their head – that’s a shocking figure in this day and age,” said CEO Sleepout chief executive Bianca Robinson. “The aim of CEO Sleepout is to bring awareness and unlock compassion around this all while..
