September is about to get a whole lot more interesting. Across the city’s green spaces, Heritage Open Days are back – and this year’s theme is all about architecture. From sweeping aqueducts to carefully planted ‘cathedrals’ of trees, Milton Keynes has more hidden design gems than you might expect, and this is your chance to explore them.
The Parks Trust has put together a programme that blends history, nature, art, and a good bit of “oh wow, I didn’t know that was here.” Whether you’re on two feet or two wheels, it’s all free to enjoy – just remember, booking for some activities is essential.
Booking opens at 9am on Tuesday 5th August (mark your diary – the popular ones go fast). You’ll find full details at theparkstrust.com/heritageopendays.
A Taste of What’s On
Community Volunteering: Heritage Heroes – 13 September, 10am, Great Linford Park
Think of this as conservation meets treasure hunt. You’ll be helping clear Blisworth Limestone rock faces – a unique part of MK’s geological heritage that’s home to specialist mosses, lichens, wildflowers, and the odd fossil if you’re lucky. It’s rewarding, hands-on work that keeps local wildlife thriving.
30-Mile Parks & Ride – 14 September, 11am, Willen Lake South
A grand cycling tour that sweeps through Ouzel Valley, Great Linford Manor Park, Loughton Valley, Furzton and Caldecotte lakes, the Grand Union Canal and Campbell Park. Expect water views, public art, and perhaps a heron or two – plus the satisfaction of seeing just how green our city really is.

Gyosei Art and Wildlife Trail – 15 September, 1.30pm, Canal Broadwalk
Eight striking art installations line this peaceful stretch of the Grand Union Canal, each telling a story of Japanese links, canal history, and local heritage. A gentle walk with plenty to look at (and photograph).
Exploring Bancroft Villa* – 16 September, 4.30pm & 6pm
Two short but fascinating walks into MK’s Roman past. Learn about daily life in the villa, see excavation finds up close, and hear the stories uncovered by archaeologists.
Awe-inspiring Architecture* – 17 September, 10.30am, Floodplain Forest
A guided walk that mixes wildlife and architecture, with time to admire the views from the aqueduct and pause at one of the bird hides along the way.
Photography Walk* – 18 September, 4pm, Willen Lake North
With local photographer Nicky Kenny leading the way, you’ll explore some of MK’s most distinctive landmarks – from the Tree Cathedral to the Medicine Wheel, the Labyrinth and the Peace Pagoda, which marked its 75th anniversary earlier this year.
Exploring the Tree Cathedral* – 19 September, 10am & 12.30pm
Nature meets architecture in this guided walk through one of the city’s most imaginative spaces. Discover how different tree species were planted to create ‘rooms’ and ‘walls’, and the vision behind the original design.
Heritage Open Days Celebration – 20 September, 12–5pm, Great Linford Manor Park
The big finale. Guided walks will reveal treasures like the Veteran Lime Tree, Doric Seat and the wonderfully named Ha-ha, all lovingly restored as part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund project. Add in live music, street food, and volunteers in period costume, and you’ve got yourself a proper party in the park.
Julie Dawes, The Parks Trust’s Events & Community Engagement Manager, sums it up perfectly: “Heritage Open Days with us are always a brilliant chance to uncover the hidden stories woven into our green spaces. Whether you’re joining a guided walk through the rich history of Bancroft or stepping back into the 18th century at our celebration at Great Linford Manor Park, there are plenty of ways to discover more about Milton Keynes’ fascinating past.”
So, whether you fancy a bike ride, a history walk, a photography tour, or just a good old-fashioned community celebration, this September is your chance to see Milton Keynes in a whole new light.
