MK’s Doughnut Hotspots – treat yourself this upcoming National Doughnut Week!

Posted 12th May 2023

If you weren’t already aware, National Doughnut Week is an annual event that aims to raise funds for The Children’s Trust. National Doughnut Week 2023 spans 20th–28th May this year, and what better way to raise awareness of the day than to look at some of the wholly (or, should I say, *holey*) delicious local doughnut sellers we have in and around Milton Keynes.

Amazing Grains of Olney

First up is a place that I, quite frankly, want to keep secret because it’s just such a hidden gem. Amazing Grains of Olney are a small bakery based in Olney, Buckinghamshire who specialise in producing ‘real’ bread and baked products using traditional methods; they only use flour (mainly from Shipton Mill), water, yeast and salt. Their bread contains no additives or processing aids and they give their baked products real time and attention in order to develop exquisite flavours during the fermentation process.

Amazing Grains was founded out of frustration at the sorry state of bread in the UK – after seeing many parts of the world where good honest bread was still being made by artisans with passion and lifelong skills, the owners began to learn from books, bakers and friends all over the world. Starting life as a micro-bakery in the tiny kitchen of their cottage, they eventually outgrew their kitchen and moved into larger premises. They are the purveyors of what are, in my opinion, the best baked products in the local area and – although bread was their original starting point – every single one of their baked products, including their delectable doughnuts, are destined to sell-out every day and at every street food or market event they attend.

Amazing Grains are open for retail to the public, from 9am until 2pm Tuesday to Friday and are regulars at Olney Farmer’s Market from 9am-1pm on the first Sunday of each month. They are currently accepting orders by SMS or WhatsApp on 07771 27142 or you can email them at: bread@amazing-grains.com and collect your produce from their bakery at 17 East St., Olney. Flat’s Doughnuts

Based slightly further out than Milton Keynes but visiting many of our local street food markets, Flat’s Doughnuts are all completely vegan and are pure proof that plant-based products are not inferior to their buttery, eggy counterparts. Based in Birmingham, Flat’s have been tootling along the motorway at 50mph in their converted 70’s ambulance and trading all over the country for a good few years.

Flat’s was borne from a chance encounter: after seeing a picture of his friend’s wedding, James discovered a type of doughnut he had never seen before and felt compelled to try and recreate it. These Canadian-inspired doughnuts are topped with a variety of flavours to deliver what for many is, without a doubt, the best part of any meal – the dessert. Choose between their vast selection of doughnuts – from their ‘Original’ which is simply dusted in vast amounts of cinnamon sugar, to their across-the-pond inspired ‘Smores’ or even the ever-popular ‘Biscoff Bonanza.’

Oh So Dough

One of Milton Keynes’ newest doughnut start-ups has absolutely boomed since it’s establishment in 2022. Working as a mother-daughter team, Natalie and Janine create made-to-order doughnuts for Oh So Dough. The company has absolutely taken MK’s street food scene by storm – their presence at one of my favourite street food events in the local area, Eat Street, is always heavily welcomed by visitors and I now know to visit early as they always sell out before closing.

Having gone from simply making a few deliveries a day then visiting the many community markets MK has to offer, catering hen parties and hosting a stand at MK’s Festival of Food to catering six events in one weekend, their growing popularity is for good reason: the variety of flavours are absolutely unmatched – from holiday-themed specials to their regular flavours, these doughnuts remind me of the first ‘fancy’ doughnuts I ever tried from Bread Ahead in London’s famous Borough Market. If you’re going to try any flavour, my top recommendation would absolutely be their sweet but sharp lemon delight!

House of Dough

House of Dough is a small, independent family-run bakery situated just off Stony Stratford High Street. They work hard to produce hand-crafted doughnuts that are made fresh every day. What started as a lockdown passion soon became an overnight success. House of Dough first opened their doors to the Milton Keynes’ public in August 2020 and on their first day they couldn’t keep up with demand, selling out within 2 hours.

Since then, they have grown insurmountably and have partnered with some of the UK’s biggest delivery platforms, including ‘Starship.’ This meant that House of Dough became the first bakery to deliver freshly made doughnuts using a robot! They currently supply to Milton Keynes and surrounding areas but, depending on location and order quantity, they even deliver personally. They have a main menu of 14 choices which are always on offer and you can order in advance up to 9am on your collection date and pick up by 3pm latest.

If you see something you like on their social media platforms, simply send your order via Instagram or Facebook Messenger!

My favourite? The Biscoff, without doubt!

Chouxly Scrumptious

Chouxly Scrumptious is run by the ‘Choux Sisters,’  Emily and Marguerite. They describe themselves as the ‘OG Choux Doughnut Creators of Milton Keynes,’ and are, of course, obsessed with everything choux. Their bakery was founded in 2015 by Kate’s Cakes, where they started the business making all sorts of incredible celebration cakes, and have since been committed to serving up delicious treats in many forms to all of their customers.

They are passionate about home baked goods, and want the whole world to know!

Chouxly Scrumptious bake with the best quality products, using local ingredients and suppliers where possible. As Marguerite is a coeliac, they are well equipped to cater for gluten-free diets; vegan and vegetarian options are also widely available as they don’t like any customer to feel left out which, as someone with a nut allergy, is incredibly appreciated! Another great addition to MK’s street food scene, Chouxly Scrumptious also deliver every Saturday.

About National Doughnut week:

National Doughnut Week is a very special week where businesses (including bakers, coffee shops, offices) all take part and sell lots of delicious doughnuts to raise funds for The Children’s Trust. It’s really easy to get involved and there is no charge to take part! All you have to do to register is complete the online registration form and you will receive a pack of goodies to help organise and promote the week. So whether you’re a baker, a school or a business that wants to get involved and raise funds for The Children’s Trust we’d love to work with you. 100% of the funds raised go straight to the charity, so rest assured all your hard work directly benefits the children involved in The Children’s Trust – the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.

More than 40,000 children in the UK suffer a brain injury every year, which could be the result of an accident or an illness. For many the prognosis is good, but there are thousands who have difficulties which are ongoing or long-term. The Children’s Trust provides support services for these children and their families. By supporting National Doughnut Week you will be helping to raise funds to help The Children’s Trust continue their work in supporting these children and their families. Last year, National Doughnut Week raised £36,041 and this year we want to beat that total!
