Willen Hospice say big thank you to volunteers

Posted 4th June 2021

Willen Hospice is marking national Volunteers’ Week this week by saying a huge thank you to their army of volunteers who play a crucial role in their work.

In a very different year to usual, the Hospice has welcomed many new volunteers, and more established volunteers have adapted their roles in many cases.

The Hospice relies on volunteers to help in all areas of its work including at the Hospice supporting patients and families, in the gardens and grounds, in shops and the warehouse and by helping at fundraising activities such as bucket collecting or marshalling. This year a number of new roles have been needed, such as drivers who have been collecting much needed PPE.

The Hospice team estimate that the work volunteers do equates to more than half a million pounds in saved salaries every year. As a charity that is critical.

Peta Wilkinson, Chief Executive at Willen Hospice said: “Volunteers play such a crucial role for us here at the Hospice.  This year has looked very different for us but we have remained committed to supporting our patients and their families who need us. Without the support of skilled and dedicated volunteers, who understand our cause, understand what we’re here to do, we really would not be able to provide the care and support that we do.

“The work they do for us in their own time is invaluable. Many go over and above what is expected and they really do become fully part of the teams they work in.

“We also want to send our best wishes the volunteers who have needed to stay at home during the pandemic and haven’t been able to return just yet. We know many have so desperately wanted to help us, but their safety is the most important thing to us. We have received many kind messages from them and we are hugely honoured to know we are in their thoughts.”

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything that you do to make sure that Willen can be at the heart of the community.”

The Hospice is also appealing to anyone who is interested in volunteering in their shops or warehouse. A range of roles are available including operating the till, sorting donations, pricing items and supporting collections and deliveries as a drivers mate. Hours are flexible and full training and a warm welcome is always given. To find out more visit www.willen-hospice.org.uk/volunteer or pop into a local Willen Hospice shop.

Willen Hospice needs to raise £4.7M from the community every year; or a staggering £9 a minute, to be able to provide specialist end-of-life care to local people and support to their families. Volunteers play a vital part in delivering that care and supporting fundraising activities.
