Wet Belts: The Hidden Engine Component That Could Cost You Thousands
Posted 5th August 2025
As vehicle technology advances, many of us are reaping the benefits: improved fuel economy, lower emissions, and quieter engines. But with these improvements come changes under the bonnet that you may not even be aware of — and one in particular could quietly lead to engine failure if left unchecked.
We’re talking about “wet timing belts”, a newer type of belt now found in many modern petrol and diesel engines.
Unlike traditional “dry” timing belts that sit outside the engine and are easily accessed for servicing, wet belts are housed inside the engine and constantly bathed in oil. They’re made of a material called Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR), which is designed to withstand heat and oil exposure – but only for a limited time.
While these belts were introduced to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, recent industry warnings have raised concern. As the belts degrade, rubber particles can begin to break off and circulate with the engine oil. This can clog oil pick-ups, reduce lubrication to key components, and — in worst cases — lead to total engine failure. It’s often a silent issue, only showing symptoms once serious damage has already been done.
Worryingly, many drivers aren’t even aware their vehicle has a wet belt – and some manufacturers previously marketed them as “maintenance-free,” only now issuing updated service guidance. This has left many owners at risk, especially if they’ve missed scheduled replacements due to cost concerns or confusion around the type of timing system their car uses.
At Soul Garages, we’ve seen the consequences first-hand, and we want to help drivers stay ahead of the problem. That’s why we’re offering MK Pulse readers an exclusive Wet Belt Replacement Package, which includes:
